How to Feed Your Cat a Raw Diet: A Beginner's Guide
In this article
Cats are obligate carnivores. Unlike dogs, they have very little biological flexibility when it comes to what they need to thrive. Their bodies are designed to get nutrition primarily from animal protein, organs, and bone, not carbohydrates or fillers.
If you're thinking about switching your cat to raw food, you're not alone. More cat parents are looking for minimally processed diets made with real ingredients that more closely reflect what cats are naturally designed to eat.
The good news? Transitioning to raw doesn't have to be complicated. With the right approach and a complete and balanced recipe, most cats can make the switch successfully.
In this guide, we'll cover everything beginners need to know, from choosing the right food to transitioning safely and building confidence along the way.
Why Feed Your Cat a Raw Diet?
Cats evolved as hunters. Their digestive systems are built to process fresh animal protein, not large amounts of starch or carbohydrates.
A complete and balanced raw diet provides nutrition through whole foods rather than relying on synthetic vitamin packs. At smallbatch, our raw cat recipes are made with 98% meat, organ, and bone, along with thoughtfully selected whole food ingredients to deliver naturally occurring nutrients.
Many cat parents choose raw feeding because they want to provide:
- Species-appropriate nutrition
- High animal protein with naturally occurring nutrients
- Minimally processed food
- Moisture-rich meals that support hydration
- Real ingredients they can recognize
Every cat is different, but many owners also notice improvements in coat quality, energy, stool quality, and enthusiasm at mealtime after making the transition.
What Makes a Good Raw Diet for Cats?
Not all raw foods are created equally.
A complete raw diet should provide appropriate amounts of muscle meat, organs, and bone to help deliver balanced nutrition.
When evaluating a raw food, look for recipes that include:
- Complete and balanced nutrition for your cat's life stage
- High levels of meat, organ, and bone
- Humanely raised meats
- Certified organic produce
- No synthetic vitamins, fillers, grains, or preservatives
- Single-protein options if your cat has food sensitivities
Cats require nutrients like taurine, arachidonic acid, and vitamin A from animal ingredients, making meat-rich recipes especially important.
Choosing the Right Raw Food for Beginners
If you're new to raw feeding, the easiest place to start is with a commercially prepared complete and balanced raw food.
These recipes take the guesswork out of feeding by providing the proper balance of nutrients while offering the convenience of ready-to-serve portions.
Smallbatch frozen raw cat food is made with 98% meat, organ, and bone using humanely raised meats, certified organic produce, and nothing artificial. Every recipe is complete and balanced for adult cats and kittens, making it easy to feed confidently from day one.
For households that need additional convenience, freeze-dried raw offers the same whole food philosophy in a shelf-stable format. Simply rehydrate before serving to add back moisture.
How to Transition Your Cat to Raw Food
Cats can be creatures of habit, so patience is key.
Some cats transition immediately, while others may take several weeks to fully accept a new food.
A gradual approach often works best:
Days 1 to 2
Mix about 25% raw food with 75% of your cat's current food.
Days 3 to 4
Increase to roughly half raw and half current food.
Days 5 to 6
Feed about 75% raw food.
Day 7 and Beyond
Transition fully to raw if your cat is eating comfortably.
Some cats prefer their food slightly warmer. Allow refrigerated raw food to come closer to room temperature before serving, or gently warm the bowl by placing it in warm water. Avoid cooking raw food, as excessive heat changes the product.
If your cat needs more time, that's perfectly okay. The goal is a successful transition, not a fast one.
Tips for Success
A few simple habits can make the transition much smoother.
- Feed on a consistent schedule.
- Offer fresh food and remove leftovers after mealtime.
- Introduce only one protein at first.
- Once your cat is eating well, begin rotating proteins to provide variety.
- Keep fresh water available at all times.
Some cats are naturally adventurous, while others need repeated exposure before accepting something new. Consistency usually wins.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Switching Too Quickly
A gradual transition gives your cat time to adjust to a new texture, aroma, and nutrient profile.
Feeding an Unbalanced Homemade Diet
Cats have precise nutritional requirements. Unless you're working with a veterinary nutrition professional, it's safest to feed a complete and balanced commercial raw diet.
Not Rotating Proteins
Once your cat has adjusted, rotating proteins can provide dietary variety and expose them to different naturally occurring nutrients.
Forgetting Safe Food Handling
Store raw food frozen until needed, thaw in the refrigerator, wash bowls after meals, and follow the handling instructions provided on the packaging.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is raw food safe for cats?
Commercially prepared complete and balanced raw diets are formulated and produced with food safety standards in mind. Proper storage, thawing, and handling are important for any raw food.
Can kittens eat raw food?
Yes. Kittens can eat complete and balanced raw diets formulated for growth or all life stages. Always follow the feeding guidelines for your kitten's age and weight.
Can I mix raw food with kibble?
Some pet parents choose to feed both, while others transition completely. If you're introducing raw for the first time, gradually mixing foods can help some cats adjust.
How much raw food should I feed my cat?
The amount depends on your cat's age, weight, activity level, and body condition. Always follow the feeding guidelines on your chosen product and adjust as needed to maintain a healthy weight.
Is freeze-dried raw the same as frozen raw?
Both start with raw ingredients. Freeze-dried raw has the moisture removed while preserving the raw nutrition, making it shelf stable until rehydrated.
Give Your Cat the Diet They Were Designed For
Making the switch to raw can feel like a big step, but it doesn't have to be overwhelming. Starting with a complete and balanced recipe made from thoughtfully sourced ingredients allows you to focus on what matters most: giving your cat real food that supports their natural nutritional needs.
