Where Your Pet’s Food Comes From: A Closer Look at Ingredient Sourcing

We wanted to take a closer look at something we think about every day.

The land, the animals, the soil, and everything that happens before it becomes food is the foundation of everything we do at smallbatch.

When it comes to pet food, sourcing isn’t just a detail. It directly impacts the quality, safety, and nutritional value of what ends up in your pet’s bowl. The way animals are raised, how crops are grown, and how ingredients are handled all shape the final product.

At smallbatch, sourcing is built into every decision we make.

Humanely raised meat starts it all

We use meats from farms that prioritize animal welfare and responsible practices.

That includes chickens raised on family farms with room to roam, fresh air, and no antibiotics. Pork comes from multigenerational farms where animals are never confined to gestation crates and are raised without growth promotants. Our grass-fed beef and lamb are pasture-raised with rotational grazing, never in feedlots.

These practices support healthier animals and better quality protein, while also contributing to more thoughtful land use and long-term sustainability.

Organic produce begins with better soil

We source certified organic produce because it starts with healthier soil.

Organic farming focuses on building nutrient-rich soil through composting, crop rotation, and natural inputs, rather than synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. It also avoids GMOs and supports biodiversity and pollinator health.

That matters because soil health directly impacts plant quality, and plant quality contributes meaningful nutrients to your pet’s food.

Responsibly sourced seafood matters too

For fish and seafood, sourcing plays just as important a role.

We prioritize sustainably sourced options like rainbow trout and pollock, along with responsibly harvested blue mussels that are naturally rich in omega-3s. Many of these choices align with standards like Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch recommendations.

It’s about supporting ocean health while still delivering clean, functional nutrition.

Why small batches matter

Sourcing is only part of the story. How food is made matters too.

We craft our recipes in small batches so we can maintain tighter control over ingredient quality, ensure consistency, and stay closely connected to our suppliers and sourcing standards.

It’s a slower, more intentional way of doing things, but it allows us to hold the line on quality.

From farm to bowl

Everything we make starts long before it reaches your pet’s bowl.

It starts on farms, in pastures, and in the soil. It shows up in how animals are raised, how crops are grown, and how ingredients are handled every step of the way.

We get to work with farms and partners who care about that every day. And every time you choose smallbatch, you’re supporting that system right along with us.

Better sourcing leads to better food. And better food supports something bigger than just what’s in the bowl.
