Our Sourcing Philosophy

Built on better standards

Humanely raised & harvested
Meat, Organ, & Bone

Our sourcing standards put animal welfare first. We partner with family-owned farms where animals can forage, socialize, and live in clean, protected environments. We only work with farms we know and trust, never buying commodity ingredients.

Whole cuts &
high protein for species-appropriate nutrition

We use whole muscle cuts, nutrient-dense organs, and ground bone to create recipes naturally rich in animal protein mirroring how dogs and cats are meant to eat. Every recipe is built around real, identifiable parts of the animal, delivering naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, and amino acids in their most bioavailable form. The result is balanced, species-appropriate nutrition that truly nourishes from the inside out.

100% certified
organic produce

We source only 100% certified organic produce, never seconds or discards. That means no harmful pesticides, no GMOs, and only fresh, vibrant fruits, vegetables, and herbs like butternut squash, bok choy, and oregano. Every ingredient meets the same high standards we expect for our own food.

No synthetics -naturally sourced
supplements

Our recipes start with whole foods, including meat, bone, organ, organic produce, and herbs, enhanced with natural supplements like fish oil, kelp, and chia seeds. To ensure complete, balanced nutrition, we use only natural-source Vitamin E and chelated minerals where needed, never synthetic vitamin packs. Every ingredient is hand-selected and added with purpose.

We Source Every Ingredient

Many pet food brands rely on co-manufacturers to purchase their ingredients, limiting visibility into sourcing. At smallbatch, we choose every ingredient ourselves, working directly with trusted farms and suppliers who raise animals humanely and grow food responsibly. This gives us full transparency and control over every recipe.

Small batches aren’t just how we make our food; they reflect what we stand for. Producing in small, carefully controlled runs allows us to maintain the highest quality, preserve freshness, and stay true to our core values with every recipe.

Frequently asked questions

What does “humanely raised and harvested” mean at smallbatch?

At smallbatch, humane sourcing means our animals are raised with care, never in factory farms or feedlots. They have space to roam, forage, and socialize naturally. Every farm partner holds welfare certifications and is personally audited by our team to ensure ethical treatment and the highest quality meat, organ, and bone.

Where does smallbatch source its proteins from?

We source our meats from trusted family farms and ranches that share our commitment to animal welfare, environmental responsibility, and transparency. Every protein we use is humanely raised and harvested, without added hormones or antibiotics.

Our beef and lamb are pasture-raised and grass-fed in New Zealand, never confined to feedlots. Our poultry comes from GAP-rated family farms where birds are raised with space to move and a vegetarian, GMO-free diet. Our pork is crate-free and raised without growth promotants on multigenerational family farms.

We don’t outsource ingredient sourcing or purchase anonymous commodity meat. We choose our partners intentionally—prioritizing whole cuts, responsible farming practices, and traceable supply chains. Because when you start with better meat, you don’t need shortcuts.

Why is organic produce important in pet food?

We source our produce exclusively from certified organic farms because it’s better for pets, people, and the planet. Organic farming starts with healthy soil—built through composting, cover cropping, and crop rotation—not chemical fertilizers. That matters, because nutrient-rich soil produces stronger plants, and stronger plants deliver more functional nutrition in every bite.

Organic farms don’t use synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or GMOs. That means fewer toxins on the food and in the environment, and more peace of mind for pet parents who care about what goes in the bowl. Many of the ingredients we use—like leafy greens, root vegetables, and fresh herbs—are especially vulnerable to conventional pesticide use, making organic sourcing even more critical.

We also value how organic farming supports biodiversity, pollinator health, and long-term sustainability. It’s not just about what’s left out—it’s about what’s built in: integrity, intention, and transparency from seed to harvest. When you see organic produce on our label, it’s a reflection of everything we believe in.

What does it mean that smallbatch avoids synthetic supplements?

Our recipes are powered by whole food nutrition—not synthetic vitamin packs. We use natural sources like kelp, fish oil, and chia seeds for essential nutrients, plus chelated minerals for easy absorption. Every ingredient is real, functional, and purposefully added to support complete, balanced nourishment.
